WALLEYE / PERCH LIMITS FOR 2012

The Lake Erie Fishery Commission held their annual meeting last week and after crunching walleye and perch numbers the limits for both species will remain the same as last year. Four walleyes per day for the spring season until April 30 and six per day the remainder of the year. The estimated population for walleyes up from last year from 21.2 million to 25 million. The perch limit will remain at 30 per day even though the numbers were down for perch. I would expect similar catch results as we had last year with most of the fish coming from the 2007 and 2010 hatch. The trophy fish will be from the large hatch of 2003.

Lake Erie Hawgs

OGF reports Hawgs on the reefs 10 to 11 lb fish being caught. Reef Runners and Husky Jerks All caught this passed weekend.

Attended South Shore fishing seminar this past weekend, great information on walleye fishing techniques. Steve Carlson did his usual good job. This show is in its ninth year and just keeps getting larger. The walleye harvest was down last year significantly both for the public and charter captains. Weather was the primarily cause with rain and wind in the spring and wind in the fall contributing to the reduction. The 2010 hatch was reported to have grown fast when compared to other hatches and should be legal size this year. This seminar is an annual deal usually sometime every March.
